Kerry Bretz Selected to New York Metro Super Lawyers List for Ninth Straight Year

Disha Chandiramani Named Rising Star for Fourth Year in a Row

Kerry Bretz, a partner with the firm, was selected to the list of New York Metro Super Lawyers for 2018 in the practice area of Immigration: Business. This is the ninth year in a row that Mr. Bretz has been named to this prestigious list; he was first selected in 2010. No more than 5% of the attorneys in New York State are named to Super Lawyers.

A former trial attorney for Immigration and Naturalization Services (now Immigration and Customs Enforcement), Mr. Bretz was involved in some major cases that challenged the retroactive application of new immigration laws and mandatory detention, including Henderson v. INS, INS v. St. Cyr, Calcano-Martinez v. INS and St John v. McElroy. He is a frequent lecturer and has been interviewed by major media outlets.

Mr. Bretz is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the former commissioner for the Archdiocese of New York’s Commission for the Dignity of Immigrants. He is admitted to practice in New York, Connecticut, and Florida and before the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Third and Fifth Circuits. He has a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) and a Juris Doctor from the City University of New York.

Ms. Chandiramani was selected as one of the Metro New York Super Lawyers “Rising Stars.” This is an even more exclusive list, with no more than 2.5% of all attorneys in New York State being selected. She was selected in the practice areas of Immigration: Business and Family Law. Ms. Chandiramani has been selected as a Rising Star for the fourth straight year, starting in 2012.

Prior to joining Bretz & Coven, LLP, Ms. Chandiramani worked at CONNECT, a nonprofit group dedicated to the prevention and elimination of gender violence. She assisted domestic violence survivors in obtaining legal status in the U.S. While attending City University of New York Law School, she took part in the Immigration and Refugee Rights Clinic and successfully litigated a VAWA Cancellation of Removal case before the Executive Office of Immigration Review.

She is a member of both New York and New Jersey state bars and has represented clients before the United States Immigration and Citizenship Services and the Executive Office for Immigration Review. She has a Bachelor of Arts in the Administration of Justice and Psychology from Penn State University. She also minored in Spanish which she completed at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Immigration Consequences of Criminal and Fraudulent Conduct
The immigration consequences of criminal or fraudulent conduct can be harsh and often illogical. Even a very minor offense could have a dramatic immigration consequence, including deportation, detention without bond, being denied naturalization, a visa or re-entry into the United States. Likewise, the use of fake or fraudulent documents, aliases, and other misrepresentations can have similar immigration consequences. Kerry Bretz and Bretz & Coven have been counseling non-citizen criminal defendants, as well as their lawyers, for over 20 years. We have a long history of strategizing deportation and removal defenses, as well as applications for waivers, in very complicated cases.
